Master of Arts in Adult Learning and Development
Course Aims
The Masters Degree in Adult Learning and Development programme aims to provide an intellectually challenging and vocationally relevant environment, enabling graduates to contribute significantly to the training profession in Ireland and abroad.
The Masters programme offers trainers and educators working with adults the opportunity to:
- Extend and deepen their knowledge and understanding of theory underlying adult learning and training.
- Contribute to the debate on the role of lifelong learning in the context of international experience, government priorities and the framework for future developments.
- Develop analytical and critical skills.
Entry Requirements

Academic: Candidates must have achieved a minimum of a 2.2 honours degree. Candidates with less than the minimum requirements may apply to take a qualifying MA examination.

Technological: Candidates should have computer proficiency.

Experiential: Candidates must possess a minimum of three years’ experience in training and education or other relevant experience.
Candidates for entry may will be required to attend for interview prior to being offered a place on the programme. The number of places will be restricted.
Programme Delivery and Modules
This open learning programme is delivered over two academic years and attendance at workshops, seminars and tutorials form an integral part of the programme.

ED401: Research Methods 1
(Credits: 5 ECTS • Workshop: 2 days)
Research Methods 1
develops principles relating to planning and designing research, developing literature review and preparing survey strategies.
ED402: Research Methods 2
(Credits: 5 ECTS • Workshop: 2 days)
Research Methods 2 explores in detail qualitative and quantitative methods of research based on philosophical assumptions and applied to different research questions.
ED404: Psychology of Learning 1
(Credits: 10 ECTS • Workshop: 2 days)
Psychology of Learning 1 explores cognitive and behavioural aspects of learning with particular emphasis on adult educational development.
ED407: Learning Society 1
(Credits: 5 ECTS

Learning Society 1
examines the structure of European
education and new technologies of learning with particular emphasis on
social and community change.
ED406: Learning Society 2
(Credits: 5 ECTS • Workshop: 2 days)
Learning Society 2 examines the challenges to Irish Education
in a globalised environment and takes a lifelong learning approach to
context and issues.
ED408: Human Resources Development & Training for Work
(Credits: 5 ECTS • Workshop: 2 days)
Human Resources Development & Training for Work explores
human potential in the context of job settings and the scope for
diversity in human potential development in the working environment.
ED409: Education and Training Technology
(Credits: 10 ECTS • Workshop: 2 days)
Education and Training Technology focuses on the added value
that technologies can bring to education and training. It looks at new
technologies and how they can be incorporated into the learning
process.
YEAR 2
ED403: Psychology of Learning 2
(Credits: 10 ECTS • Workshop: 2 days)
Psychology of Learning 2 explores issues of personality,
intelligence and motivation and their impact on learning in an adult
context.
ED405: Management of Training and Education
(Credits: 5 ECTS • Workshop: 2 days)
Management of Training and Education analyses culture and
change with particular emphasis on education and training in a variety
of organisations.
ED410: Dissertation
(Credits: 30 ECTS • Workshop: 2 days)
Assessment
Participants will be required to submit a written assignment for each module in addition to completing other set coursework. A proportion of marks will be available for quality of contributions to online discussions on course topics. A research dissertation (25,000 words) must be submitted during the second year of the programme.
